RRP: £24.99 Our Price: £7.50 (subject to change) Editorial Product Description Amber Armstrong, Ashley Palmer, Mark Fredrichs, Katie Featherston, Micah SloatDirector: Oren Peli ReviewsBoo!! Not scary? Neither is the film ... Review date: 2010-08-27 Rating: 2 out of 10 Paranormal Activity is a prime example of what happens when the marketing department is more adept than the actual production department. 'Scariest film EVER?' ... my big toe it is. It's about as terrifying an experience as watching 'Most Haunted'. Actually I take that back. 'Most Haunted' is more disturbing on any level. The problem with Paranormal Activity is that if you were born before 1995 you'll have seen it all before. The actual premise of the film is simple - young couple thinks their house is haunted and set up cameras to see what's going on. Think 'Blair Witch' but with less snot and set indoors. Unfortunately for Paranormal Activity there actually isn't a great deal going on and the cameras might as well be turned off. Most of the film, as with every other horror of this type, largely involves an odd noise or door banging followed by the aforementioned couple looking scared and asking 'did you hear that?' or 'what was that?'. Yawn! If the ghost involved was a really nasty bit of work and the film built up to revealing it in all its nasty glory it might be good, but this ghost is so tame that if the Ghostbusters showed up, their pK meters would barely register. And that's really my gripe with Paranormal Activity. There was a real opportunity for young filmmakers to think of something fresh, new and exciting to add to this genre. Instead, what they did was copy every other film idea involving ghosts and move it to a first-person view. Original back with Blair Witch. Not now ... So deep down I can't recommend Paranormal Activity. It's barely worth watching because there are better films of this type out there. For example The Fourth Kind, released about the same time, is significantly better but got lost in the hype that surrounded this mediocre offering. Scary stuff Review date: 2010-08-21 Rating: 10 out of 10 Pretty scary. Suprised so many people give it 1 star. I find the 'it's not scary at all, don't bother' reviews a bit pointless as clearly the majority do find it a frightening film. As other reviewers have stated, it depends a lot on how you watch it. If you're someone who chats all the way through, gets up to make a cup of tea or flicks through the newspaper, it will totally lose it's impact. It needs to be watched in silence, given full concentration....preferably alone in a dark room! Paranormally bad Review date: 2010-08-19 Rating: 2 out of 10 This isn't a scary film, even made me laugh a couple of times. Nothing really happens and I nearly fell asleep. The actors were anoying and left your wondering 'why are you doing that??', it was almost as if they were trying to annoying the 'spirit'. The bedroom scenes were also frustratingly unscary. All in all this film is is bad. Thats all there is to say. How Blair Witch should have been Review date: 2010-08-17 Rating: 10 out of 10 Here it seems is another 'marmite' movie, you either love it or hate it, much like Blair witch Project (which I hate - see review)This is an example on how to scare you without using CGI and dodgy props. The scares are subtle and in doing so keeps the watcher in suspense. A lot of reviewers hate this film, stating how it's not scary at all (these are probably fans of Blair witch..yikes!) It all depends on how you watch this film. I watched alone, sat with the lights off after midnight. If you watch this with the lights on with friends (which I've done as well)then it's just not the same. I guarantee if you watch it like I first did you will have a different take on it. It freaked me out. The fact that you stare intently at the screen waiting for something to move, and often enough nothing happens, but when it does, BAM! goes the old heart rate. A lot of people have only seen the dodgy police shooting ending which is a shame because the cinema ending with boyfriend propelled at screen is much more unnerving. At the end of the day this film was made to a budget of a reported $8000. So hat off to the film makers for this little gem and am now looking forward to the upcoming sequel. Ps -I have been wetting myself laughing at all the dodgy rip-offs of this film. Check out Paranormal Ascendancy..ha..makes Paranormal activity look like it has the same budget as Avatar....real bad!
